YouTube is testing a new feature that allows creators to use AI to “restyle” licensed songs for their short films. The small group of creators with access can enter prompts to change different elements in the song, such as the song's mood or genre, and the expansion of YouTube's AI Dream Track feature will creates a remastered 30-second soundtrack.
According to YouTube:
If you're a creator in the test group, you can choose an eligible song > describe how you want to restyle the song > then create a unique 30-second soundtrack to use in your short film me.
These redesigned soundtracks will have clear attribution to the original song through the Short itself and the audio pivot Shorts page, and will also clearly indicate that the track has been restyled using AI.
YouTube said the Dream Track test allows creators to perform songs with the AI-generated vocals of artists who agree to participate, including Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato and John Legend. It's not yet known which songs might be remastered in this test or which record label YouTube is partnering with. However, a June report from the Financial Times said YouTube had approached major record labels with offers to use their songs to train AI models.
The Verge reached out to YouTube for more information but did not immediately receive a response.
